FKF boss Hussein Mohammed Defends record, dismisses CHAN insurance claims

Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed defended his administration’s record, highlighting key milestones achieved in just 15 months while firmly dismissing allegations surrounding insurance arrangements during the 2025 African Nations Championship.

In a strongly worded statement, Mohammed said the federation had made “significant progress” in revitalising Kenyan football, citing improved governance, successful hosting of international tournaments, and renewed confidence from global football bodies.

Among the achievements listed was Kenya’s hosting of CHAN 2025 and the FIFA Women’s Series, as well as the participation of the Harambee Stars in the FIFA Series finals in March 2026. He also pointed to the qualification of the Harambee Starlets for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as a major milestone.

Kenya’s growing stature in continental football was further underscored, he said, by recognition at the CAF Awards, where President William Ruto received an Outstanding Achievement Award for the country’s successful hosting of CHAN.

Mohammed also noted that FIFA had lifted restrictions previously imposed on Kenya following financial reforms, paving the way for expanded development programmes, including plans to build FIFA Arena pitches and a technical centre in Machakos.

However, the FKF boss used the statement to address claims circulating online regarding insurance procurement for CHAN 2025, terming them “malicious” and “unfounded.”

“The required insurance cover for CHAN 2025 was procured by CAF, not myself, and was duly secured and maintained throughout the tournament,” he said, adding that FKF did not transfer any funds to insurance providers for the competition.

He further maintained that all services were delivered in accordance with the CAF Host Agreement and insisted there was “no loss of funds” related to the insurance cover.

“FKF did not transfer or pay any money to any insurance company for CHAN 2024, and I challenge anyone with evidence to present it. There are plans to run a smear campaign against me and the Federation in an attempt to taint its reputation,” said Mohammed.

Mohammed linked the allegations to what he described as a broader smear campaign aimed at undermining reforms within the federation.

“When you fight corruption, it fights back,” he said, adding that recent restructuring within FKF had triggered resistance from vested interests.

The FKF president signaled willingness to cooperate with investigative agencies if required, but warned that responding to “every falsehood” would distract the federation from its core mandate.

On governance, Mohammed clarified that administrative and financial processes are handled through the office of the General Secretary, who serves as the accounting officer, while the president provides strategic leadership.

He reaffirmed FKF’s commitment to transparency and accountability, while urging the media to uphold accuracy and professionalism in reporting.

Kenya is currently preparing, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with Patrice Motsepe recently expressing confidence in the region’s readiness.

Despite the controversy, Mohammed insisted the federation remains focused on developing the game and strengthening Kenya’s position on the global football stage.
