François Maurice Adrien Marie Mitterrand was a French statesman born on 26 October 1916 in Jarnac, Charente, into a devoutly Catholic and conservative middle-class family.

His father, Joseph Mitterrand, worked as an engineer for the Compagnie Paris-Orléans railway and later managed a vinegar business, while his mother was Yvonne Lorrain.

He studied law and political science in Paris, earning diplomas from the University of Paris and the École Libre des Sciences Politiques.

Captured as a soldier during World War II, he escaped captivity, initially had ties to the Vichy administration, and then joined the Resistance.

After the war he entered politics, rose through ministerial posts under the Fourth Republic, led the Socialist Party, and served as President of France from 1981 to 1995, becoming the first left-wing president of the Fifth Republic and its longest-serving head of state.

He died in Paris on 8 January 1996.
