    Early Life

Frederick James Matthew DeLuca was born on October 3, 1947, in New York City to Salvatore and Carmela DeLuca. He grew up with his younger sister, Suzanne. At age 10, his family moved to Amsterdam, New York, and later to Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he attended Central High School.

DeLuca’s connection to Peter Buck, a family friend, would prove life-changing. When he was 17, he wanted to find a way to pay for college at the University of Bridgeport. Buck suggested he open a sandwich shop and lent him $1,000, which became the seed money for what would become Subway.

    The Birth of Subway

In 1965, Fred and Buck opened their first sandwich shop in Bridgeport under the name Pete’s Drive-In: Super Submarines. The name was later shortened to Subway in 1968. The concept was simple but effective: affordable, customizable submarine sandwiches marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional fast food.

The business grew steadily. A second location opened in 1966, and by 1974 the first franchise restaurant launched in Wallingford, Connecticut. DeLuca’s family was deeply involved—his mother managed the first shop, his sister worked behind the counter, and his wife helped with corporate tasks.

By 1978, Subway had 100 locations. By 1987, the chain had grown to 1,000 restaurants, surpassing McDonald’s U.S. footprint at the time. Subway became known worldwide for its aggressive expansion strategy, catchy slogans like the “Five Dollar Footlong,” and the “Subway diet” campaign fronted by Jared Fogle in the 2000s.

By 2010, Subway had overtaken McDonald’s as the largest fast-food chain in the world by store count, with over 33,000 restaurants. Today, the company operates approximately 37,000 locations worldwide.

Fred Deluca Net Worth and Business Ventures

At the time of his death in 2015, Fred DeLuca’s net worth was $2.8 billion. Much of his fortune came from Subway’s rapid global expansion, as well as his additional business ventures.

DeLuca and Peter Buck also co-founded Franchise Brands, a company focused on helping other entrepreneurs grow their franchises. In 2000, DeLuca published Start Small, Finish Big: 15 Key Lessons to Start–And Run–Your Own Successful Business, sharing the principles behind his success. He also appeared on CBS’s Undercover Boss in 2010.

    Controversies

Subway faced challenges during DeLuca’s leadership, including lawsuits related to lease agreements and controversies tied to its longtime spokesman Jared Fogle, who was later convicted of criminal charges unrelated to the company. Though these issues damaged Subway’s reputation, they did not diminish DeLuca’s standing as one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the fast-food industry.

    Personal Life

Fred DeLuca married his high school sweetheart, Elisabeth, in 1969. They had one son, Jonathan, who later joined Subway’s board of directors. Reports also connected DeLuca to another child, Luca, whom he allegedly adopted with a former girlfriend, though legal disputes followed after his death regarding promised inheritance.

    Fred Deluca Death

In 2013, DeLuca revealed that he was battling leukemia. Despite treatment, he passed away on September 14, 2015, at the age of 67, just weeks after Subway celebrated its 50th anniversary. His sister Suzanne briefly oversaw operations until new leadership took over.

Though Subway has faced challenges since his passing, including a decline in U.S. store count, it remains the largest sandwich chain in the world and one of the most recognizable fast-food brands globally.

    Fred Deluca Honors

DeLuca received numerous recognitions during his lifetime. In 2002, his alma mater, the University of Bridgeport, awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. In 2015, the Connecticut Restaurant Association posthumously honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
