She has made a significant impact in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and international leagues, most notably with Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Super League and EuroLeague Women.

    Siblings

Gabby grew up in a tight-knit family with four siblings, each contributing to a household filled with athletic and personal achievements.

Gabby’s siblings include her sisters Kayla Williams and Omarri Williams, and her brothers Matthew (Matt) Williams Jr. and Dominic Williams.

Kayla has followed a path similar to Gabby’s, playing basketball and showcasing her athletic talent, though she has not pursued a professional career to the same extent.

Omarri, while less documented in the public sphere, shares the family’s close bond and has been a supportive presence in Gabby’s life.

Matthew Jr., often referred to as Matt, and Dominic have also been part of the Williams family’s athletic narrative, with Matt occasionally mentioned in connection to Gabby’s basketball journey, though specific details about their pursuits remain private.

    Career

Williams first gained recognition at Edward C. Reed High School in Sparks, Nevada, where she led her team to a Class 4A state title as a sophomore, averaging 18 points, 10 rebounds, and seven steals per game.

Despite a severe knee injury during her junior year—a torn anterior cruciate ligament and partially torn meniscus—she recovered to become a top recruit, eventually committing to the University of Connecticut (UConn).

At UConn, Gabby played for the Huskies from 2014 to 2018, contributing to a 148-3 record, four Final Four appearances, and back-to-back national championships in 2015 and 2016.

Her versatility as a forward, combined with her defensive prowess, made her a standout collegiate player.

In 2018, Gabby was selected fourth overall by the Chicago Sky in the WNBA Draft, marking the beginning of her professional career.

She played for the Sky until 2021, when she was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks, though she missed that season due to her commitment to the French national team for the Tokyo Olympics.

In 2022, she joined the Seattle Storm, where she earned All-Defensive Second Team honors, before opting to focus on overseas play.

Internationally, Gabby has thrived, winning the Spanish League Championship with Spar CityLift Girona in 2019 and the EuroLeague Women’s Championship with Sopron Basket in 2022, where she was named Final Four MVP.

Her decision to prioritize European leagues, such as her current stint with Fenerbahçe, reflects the financial and professional opportunities abroad, though she returned to the Storm in August 2024 for the remainder of the WNBA season after a standout performance at the Paris Olympics.

    Accolades

During her time at UConn, Gabby was named the 2017 WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year and earned First-Team All-American honors from the WBCA and USBWA.

She was also a Second-Team AP All-American and received the AAC Defensive Player of the Year award in 2017, alongside being named to the AAC First Team.

Her collegiate achievements include being part of two national championship teams and recording one of only five triple-doubles in UConn history, as well as joining an elite group of Huskies with over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

In her professional career, Gabby’s accolades continue to reflect her versatility and defensive excellence.

In the WNBA, she was named to the All-Defensive Second Team in 2022 while with the Seattle Storm, showcasing her ability to impact games on both ends of the court.

Internationally, her 2022 EuroLeague Women’s Championship with Sopron Basket came with the prestigious Final Four MVP award, cementing her status as a global star.

At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Gabby was named to the All-Star Five and recognized as the Best Defensive Player, averaging 15.5 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.8 steals per game, leading France to a silver medal.

Her earlier bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics further underscores her international success.

Beyond basketball, Gabby’s high school track and field achievements, including qualifying as an alternate for the 2012 London Olympics in high jump, highlight her multi-sport talent.
