The subsidized maize flour has already hit the shelves. In Nairobi, the maize flour is currently available at Naivas and Tuskys supermarkets.
The first consignment of maize from Mexico arrived in the country last week. The government will distribute the consignments of unga through millers.
Through its twitter handle, Nakumatt supermarkets also confirmed that it had received a stock of the subsidized maize.
“We have received the Sh90 GoK subsidized maize flour at our central warehouse. We are working towards making it available in all branches,” @Nakumatt tweeted.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett said the government will use Sh. 6 billion on this subsidy program that will see millers access 90kg of maize at Sh. 2,300 from Sh. 4,600.
Agriculture PS Richard Lesiyampe placed the maize stock at 980,000 bags and said it will last until the end of the month.
“We expect to import 2.9 million bags of maize in June and 1.2 million in July,” Lesiyampe said.
According to the Cereal Millers Association, the second vessel will get to the Port of Mombasa in three weeks. The government intends to import five million bags of maize until the end of July.
