Installing a washing machine at home may seem intimidating, but with a little care and the right steps, you can do it yourself safely. Whether you’re setting up a new machine or moving an old one to a new spot, it’s important to follow proper procedures to avoid leaks, damage, or electrical hazards. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you connect your washing machine confidently. Here is how to connect a washing machine.

    1. Prepare the Installation Space

Make sure you have a suitable space with access to:

    • A water supply (cold and sometimes hot tap)
    • A drainage point (usually a standpipe or dedicated drain)
    • An electrical socket (preferably grounded)
Clear the area of any obstacles and check that the floor is level to keep the machine stable during use.
    1. Attach the Water Inlet Hose

Most washing machines come with an inlet hose for cold water (and sometimes a second one for hot water).

    • Connect the end of the hose with the rubber washer to the tap.
    • Tighten it securely by hand or with a wrench, but don’t overtighten as this can damage the washer.
    • Connect the other end of the hose to the machine’s water inlet valve and secure it firmly.
    1. Connect the Drain Hose

The drain hose carries used water out of the machine.

    • Insert the hose securely into a standpipe or hook it over the edge of a sink or dedicated drain point.
    • Make sure the hose is not kinked or bent, as this can cause drainage problems.
    • Ensure the hose height is within the manufacturer’s recommended range (usually around 60–90 cm) to prevent siphoning.
    1. Level the Machine

Use a spirit level to check if the machine is balanced.

    • Adjust the machine’s feet by screwing them up or down until the machine is stable.
    • This will reduce vibrations and noise during operation and help protect the machine over time.
    1. Plug In and Test

Plug the washing machine into a suitable electrical socket.

    • Turn on the water supply at the tap.
    • Run a short test cycle (often without clothes) to check for any leaks from the inlet or drain hoses and to ensure everything works smoothly.
