A geyser is one of the biggest consumers of electricity in many homes. However, with a few smart habits and adjustments, you can reduce your power bill while still enjoying hot water when needed. Here is how to save electricity with geyser.

    1. Lower the Thermostat Temperature

Most geysers are set at very high temperatures by default:

    • Set your geyser thermostat to around 55°C to 60°C
    • This is warm enough for household use and prevents overheating
    • Lower temperatures use less electricity to maintain heat

Avoid setting it too low, as it may encourage bacterial growth.

    1. Use a Timer

Installing a geyser timer can significantly reduce energy waste:

    • Set the timer to switch the geyser on only when needed (e.g., early morning and evening)
    • Turn it off during times no one uses hot water, like midday or late at night
    • This stops the geyser from constantly reheating water all day

Timers are affordable and easy to install.

    1. Insulate the Geyser and Pipes

    Preventing heat loss saves energy:

    • Fit a geyser blanket to keep the heat inside the tank
    • Insulate hot water pipes, especially those near the geyser
    • This helps the water stay warm longer and reduces the need for reheating

Proper insulation improves efficiency and pays off over time.

    1. Take Shorter Showers

Using less hot water means the geyser runs less:

    • Encourage quick showers rather than long ones
    • Close the tap while soaping or shampooing
    • Consider low-flow shower heads to reduce hot water use

    Saving water also saves electricity.

    1. Switch Off When Away

If you’re not using the geyser, don’t let it run:

    • Turn off the geyser when going on holiday or away for the weekend
    • No need to keep water hot when no one is home
    • This simple action avoids unnecessary electricity use

Remember to turn it back on a few hours before you need hot water again.

    1. Maintain the Geyser Regularly

    A well-maintained geyser performs better:

    • Check for leaks, rust, or unusual noises
    • Flush the tank yearly to remove sediment buildup
    • Replace faulty thermostats or elements when needed

Regular maintenance ensures it works efficiently and safely.
