John Phillips was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter and music promoter who had an estimated net worth of $10 million at the time of his death in 2001. He built his wealth through his career as the leader and principal songwriter of The Mamas & the Papas, as well as through songwriting, record sales, music publishing and other entertainment projects.

Phillips was one of the key figures behind the folk-rock sound that defined the 1960s. He wrote or co-wrote some of The Mamas & the Papas’ biggest songs, including “California Dreamin'” and “Monday, Monday.” He also wrote the Scott McKenzie hit “San Francisco” and the folk standard “Me and My Uncle.”

Beyond performing, Phillips was involved in organizing the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival, one of the most influential music festivals of the era.

    Early Life

John Phillips was born on August 30, 1935, in Parris Island, South Carolina. He was the son of Edna and Claude Phillips, a retired U.S. Marine Corps officer.

Phillips grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, where he attended Linton Hall Military School. He disliked the school’s strict environment and became interested in music at a young age.

While still a teenager, he formed a doo-wop group with other young musicians. He later attended George Washington High School, graduating in 1953.

Phillips briefly attended the United States Naval Academy before leaving during his first year. He subsequently enrolled at Hampden-Sydney College but also left before completing his studies.

    The Journeymen

Phillips moved to New York City in the early 1960s to pursue a career in music. He formed the folk trio The Journeymen with singer-songwriters Scott McKenzie and Dick Weissman.

The group released three albums and appeared on the television music program Hootenanny. Although The Journeymen did not achieve the commercial success Phillips would later enjoy, the group helped establish him as a professional musician and songwriter.

    The Mamas & the Papas

Phillips’ biggest career breakthrough came in the mid-1960s when he formed The Mamas & the Papas with his wife Michelle Phillips and singer Denny Doherty. Cass Elliot later joined the group.

After moving to Los Angeles, the group signed a recording deal with Dunhill Records.

Their breakthrough came with “California Dreamin’,” which Phillips co-wrote with Michelle Phillips. Released in 1965, the song became one of the defining recordings of the 1960s and reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The group’s debut album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, followed in 1966. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced “Monday, Monday,” which became the group’s only No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Monday, Monday” also earned The Mamas & the Papas a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

The group went on to release several more albums, including The Mamas & the Papas, The Mamas & the Papas Deliver, The Papas & the Mamas and People Like Us.

    Songwriting Success

Songwriting was an important part of Phillips’ career and wealth.

In addition to his work with The Mamas & the Papas, he wrote “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair),” which became a major hit for Scott McKenzie in 1967.

Phillips also wrote “Me and My Uncle,” a song that was later popularized by The Grateful Dead.

His songwriting work extended beyond his own group, giving him another source of income and establishing him as an important songwriter of the 1960s and 1970s.

    Monterey Pop Festival

Phillips was also involved in organizing the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival in California.

The festival featured major performers from the era and became an important moment in the development of the 1960s counterculture music scene.

The event helped establish Monterey as one of the landmark festivals in rock history and further expanded Phillips’ influence beyond his work as a performer.

The New Mamas & the Papas

Phillips attempted to revive The Mamas & the Papas in the early 1980s.

He formed The New Mamas & the Papas with Denny Doherty, his daughter Mackenzie Phillips and singer Elaine McFarlane. The group began performing in 1982 before embarking on national and international tours.

The lineup changed several times over the years, with Scott McKenzie eventually replacing Doherty.

The project allowed Phillips to continue performing songs associated with his earlier career while introducing The Mamas & the Papas’ music to new audiences.

    Solo Career

Phillips also pursued music independently of The Mamas & the Papas.

He released his self-titled debut solo album in 1970. Although the album was not a major commercial success, it produced the song “Mississippi.”

During the 1970s, Phillips also contributed songs to film projects, including Brewster McCloud and The Man Who Fell to Earth.

He later worked on the stage musical Man on the Moon. Two additional albums, Pay Pack & Follow and Phillips 66, were released after his death.

    Substance Abuse and Health Problems

Phillips struggled with substance abuse for much of his later life. He became dependent on heroin and cocaine during the 1970s and was convicted of drug trafficking in the early 1980s.

His long-term drug use contributed to serious health problems. In 1992, he underwent a liver transplant.

Despite his health challenges, Phillips continued working in music and performing during the later stages of his career.

    Personal Life

Phillips was married four times and had several children.

He married Susan Adams in 1957, and they had two children, Mackenzie and Jeffrey.

In 1962, Phillips married Michelle Gilliam, who became known as Michelle Phillips. They had a daughter, Chynna Phillips, who later became a successful singer as a member of Wilson Phillips.

    The couple divorced in 1969.

Phillips later married model Geneviève Waïte. They had two children, Tamerlane and Bijou, before divorcing in 1985. He married Farnaz Arassteh in 1995.

Phillips died on March 18, 2001, at the age of 65. He died from heart failure after years of health complications.
