The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has issued a new directive affecting all importers of used motor vehicles.

In a public notice released on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, KEBS announced that only Right-Hand Drive vehicles first registered from January 1, 2019 will be allowed into the country starting January 1, 2026.

This follows the eight-year age limit rule set under KS 1515:2000.

“We wish to notify all importers of used motor vehicles, including returning residents, diplomatic staff and the general public, that only RHD vehicles whose first registration is from January 1, 2019 and later shall be allowed in the country effective January 1, 2026,” the notice reads.

This means all vehicles must meet the KS 1515:2000 inspection standards.

Vehicles imported from countries where KEBS has contracted an inspection agency — including Japan, UAE, UK, Thailand, Singapore and South Africa — must have a valid Certificate of Roadworthiness issued by Quality Inspection Services Inc. Japan (QISJ).

KEBS also warned that vehicles first registered in 2018 or earlier will not be accepted if they arrive after December 31, 2025.

“Any vehicle registered in 2018 or earlier, arriving after December 31, 2025, will be deemed non-compliant and shall be rejected at the importer’s expense,” the statement added.
