A 36-year-old house help was found dead at an apartment in Kilimani, Nairobi, in a suspected suicide incident early Wednesday morning.
The woman, identified as Grace Akinyi Mangana, was found hanging from a staircase grill at Mula Apartments at about 6:30am.
Police said the incident was reported by the caretaker of the apartments who told officers that he woke up to find tenants gathered at the staircase.
Upon checking, he found Mangana’s body lying on the staircase after tenants had removed her from the grill in an apparent attempt to rescue her.
Police said the deceased was employed as a house help by a tenant and lived on the third floor.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Mangana may have woken up at an unknown time in the early morning while her employer was asleep before allegedly hanging herself using a black cloth.
The body was moved to the City Mortuary, where it was preserved pending a post-mortem examination.
Police are continuing investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
Suicide cases have been on the rise amid efforts to address the menace. Most of the victims are men, police statistics show.
And police in Nyatike, Migori County, have launched investigations after the body of an unidentified teenage girl was recovered from River Ongoche on Wednesday.
The body was reported floating in the river at about noon within Central Kanyarwanda Sub-location, God-Bondo Location.
Police officers visited the scene and recovered the partially decomposed body of a girl believed to be about 14 years old.
Police said the body had visible injuries, including wounds on the forehead and the back of the head. Blood stains were also observed on grass along the riverbank, raising suspicion that the girl may have been assaulted before her body was dumped in the river.
The deceased was found without clothes, while police noted other circumstances at the scene that are being treated as part of the investigation.
The body was retrieved from the river and moved to Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation pending identification and post-mortem examination.
Police have opened investigations into the suspected murder and are working to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances leading to her death.
