    Early Life

Kerry Livgren was born on September 18, 1949, in Topeka, Kansas, to parents Betty and Allen Livgren. From an early age, he showed a strong interest in music, even building his own electric guitar and writing original songs.

He graduated from Topeka West High School in 1967 and later attended Washburn University, though he did not complete his degree. During this time, he focused heavily on developing his musical skills and forming bands.

    Early Bands

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Livgren played in several bands that helped shape his musical career.

His first band was the Gimlets, formed with high school friends. The group performed original music across Kansas and nearby Missouri. Afterward, Livgren joined the R&B band the Mellotones, where he worked alongside keyboardist Don Montre.

Livgren and Montre later joined the band the Reasons Why, though the partnership was short-lived. They soon revived the Gimlets under a new name, Saratoga, which became an important step toward forming Kansas.

    Success with Kansas

In 1970, Livgren and drummer Phil Ehart formed a new band called Kansas, combining members from Saratoga and another group called White Clover.

After several lineup changes, Kansas signed with Don Kirshner’s record label and released their debut album Kansas in 1974. The band followed it with Song for America and Masque.

Kansas achieved major commercial success with the 1976 album Leftoverture, which reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and featured Livgren’s hit song “Carry On Wayward Son.”

The band’s next album, Point of Know Return, peaked at No. 4 on the charts and included the iconic single “Dust in the Wind,” Kansas’s highest-charting hit.

Later albums included Monolith, Audio-Visions, Vinyl Confessions, and Drastic Measures. Livgren left the band in 1983 due to creative and personal differences but returned occasionally for live performances.

    AD and Proto-Kaw

After leaving Kansas, Livgren formed the Christian rock band AD with former Kansas member Dave Hope. The group appeared on Livgren’s album Time Line and released several albums, including:

    • Art of the State (1985)
    • Reconstructions (1986)
    • Prime Mover (1988)

In 2002, previously recorded material from an early Kansas lineup was released under the name Proto-Kaw. The band later reunited and released new albums, including Before Became After (2004), The Wait of Glory (2006), and Forth (2011).

    Solo Career

Livgren also pursued a solo career while working with Kansas and afterward. His debut solo album Seeds of Change was released in 1980.

Later projects included the instrumental album One of Several Possible Musiks (1989) and additional recordings through his own label, Numavox Records. He also founded the production company Grandyzine in Topeka.

In the early 2020s, he released projects such as Cantata: The Resurrection Lazarus and Q.A.R.

    Personal Life

In 1983, Livgren published his autobiography Seeds of Change: The Spiritual Quest of Kerry Livgren, written with Kenneth Boa, detailing his personal faith journey.

In 2009, Livgren suffered a stroke and underwent surgery but later made a recovery. Despite health challenges, he has remained active in music and creative work.
