    Siblings

Mikael is the older brother of Markus Granlund, who was born on April 16, 1993, and is also a professional ice hockey forward.

The brothers hail from a hockey-oriented family in the Oulu region of Northern Finland.

They both progressed through similar junior pathways, initially with Oulun Kärpät before moving to HIFK in Helsinki due to a contract dispute.

There, they even played on the same line during the 2011–12 season in the SM-liiga.

Markus was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the second round (45th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and went on to play several seasons in the NHL with teams including the Flames, Vancouver Canucks, and others before continuing his career in Europe with Genève-Servette HC.

    Career

Granlund began his career in Finnish junior hockey with Oulun Kärpät, where he averaged more than a point per game and earned All-Star recognition.

He moved to HIFK and quickly made an impact in the SM-liiga, helping the team win the Kanada-malja championship in 2011.

His strong performances, including being named Finnish Player of the Year in 2011, led to his high selection in the 2010 NHL Draft.

He made his NHL debut with the Minnesota Wild on January 19, 2013, scoring a goal in his first game against the Colorado Avalanche.

Granlund spent seven seasons with the Wild, developing into a key offensive contributor.

His breakout campaign came in 2016–17, when he posted career highs of 26 goals, 43 assists, and 69 points in 81 games, helping the team reach the second round of the playoffs.

He followed that up with 67 points in 2017–18.

In February 2019, Minnesota traded him to the Nashville Predators.

Granlund later suited up for the Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, and Dallas Stars.

With the Sharks in 2023–24, he led the team in points despite their challenges.

A midseason trade to Dallas in 2024–25 saw him contribute significantly, including recording his first career playoff hat trick.

In the summer of 2025, he signed a three-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent, bringing veteran leadership and playmaking to the roster.

Through nearly 960 regular-season NHL games, he has accumulated 198 goals and 453 assists for 651 points.

Granlund has also been a consistent performer in international competitions for Finland.

    Accolades

In Finland’s Liiga, Granlund received the Jarmo Wasama memorial trophy and Raimo Kilpiö trophy in 2010, won the SM-liiga championship in 2011, and was named Finnish Ice Hockey Player of the Year that same year.

Internationally, he was named to the World Junior Championship (WJC) First Team All-Star in 2012, earned Olympic All-Star Team honors and a bronze medal with Finland in 2014, and later received World Championship All-Star recognition in 2016 along with a silver medal.

In the NHL, his 2016–17 season brought an NHL All-Star Game selection as well as nominations for the Lady Byng Trophy (finishing third) and Frank J. Selke Trophy.

He has reached the 50-point and 40-assist marks multiple times and has been voted team player of the year during his time with the San Jose Sharks.
