The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has rescued a family of four who went missing in Tsavo East National Park, following a round-the-clock search mission.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, April 8, the family — a couple and their two children — was found safe near Kabaguchi Ranger Camp on the remote Yatta Plateau, about 50 kilometres off their planned route.

They were spotted by Tsavo Trust pilot Nick Haller, who landed his helicopter and confirmed the family was unharmed.

KWS said ground teams from both KWS and Tsavo Trust were immediately dispatched to extract the family and ensure their safe return.

Medical teams are conducting routine checks, and the family is expected to reunite with their loved ones soon.

The family had entered Tsavo East through the Manyani Gate on Saturday, April 5, at 5:40 PM.

They were scheduled to camp for two nights at Luggards Falls Special Campsite and exit through Sala Gate by Monday evening.

When they failed to leave the park by the 8:00 PM deadline, park authorities launched an emergency search.

KWS began a ground operation along the Luggards Falls–Sala Gate route on Monday night. Teams using two Land Cruisers found abandoned camping equipment at the designated campsite.

By early Tuesday morning, aerial support was deployed, including two fixed-wing aircraft and one helicopter.

The family was eventually located at around 9:30 AM on Tuesday.

Preliminary reports indicate that the family’s vehicle became stuck after they took an unauthorized route during a game drive. Their decision to stay with the vehicle played a key role in their rescue.

“We commend the sharp vigilance of Pilot Nick Haller and the dedication of all teams involved in the rescue,” said the KWS statement.

“A full debrief will follow to understand how the family became disoriented.”

The rescue effort involved a coordinated response by KWS, Tsavo Trust, and local ranger units. It showcased the strength of Kenya’s emergency protocols, as well as the importance of partnerships in managing protected wildlife areas.

“KWS appreciates the family’s cooperation and composure during the ordeal and remains committed to safeguarding both Kenya’s treasured wildlife and the safety of all visitors.”
