A postmortem examination on Evelyn Namukhula, mother who delivered five babies in March, carried on Monday has revealed the cause of her death.

According to the autopsy conducted at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she succumbed on Saturday evening, divulged that Namukhula died of peripartum cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that affects women after delivery.

The pathologist, Benson Macharia, who conducted the autopsy noted that there was fluid on the mother’s chest, heart, lungs and abdominal cavity, indicators that were consistent with the heart condition.

Speaking to the Standard, Macharia further stated: “We began by looking at the history of the medical history of the deceased because it was important in establishing the cause of death, we ruled out blood clots but we established that her heart was mildly enlarged.”

However, he mentioned that samples had been taken for further analysis, adding that the conclusive results would be out in two weeks.

Following her demise, the family has asked the government to help give a decent send off to Namukhula and her two children who had died earlier.

Speaking on their state, her father, Khassim Khalelecha noted that they were not in a position to cater for the burial and raise the children as they were peasant farmers.

“We have no resources to transport her body from Eldoret to Kakamega for the burial,” the father mentioned.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino had on Monday pledged to offer support to the family.

“I commit to supporting her family during this trying time. We will do our best to ensure that her surviving children are looked after,” he posted on his Facebook page.
