    ERC, ELECTRICITY

Kenyans will starting this month pay less for electricity following the removal of standing charges and a review on the tariffs.

The Energy and Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Monday announced that the government was doing away with the monthly fixed charge of Sh150, which translates to 36 per cent reduction for the 3.6 million low cost Kenya Power consumers.

The new tariff cuts the cost of electricity from Sh17.77 per kilowatt hour to Sh16.64.

“The Domestic Consumer Lifeline Tariff, which is meant to cushion low income households whose consumption does not exceed 10 units per billing period, will reduce by between 36 to 82 percent,” ERC Director General Pavel Oimeke said.

In June the commission had proposed the removal of the monthly fixed charges for all consumer categories and harmonize them in the energy charge.

“This tariff review seeks to ensure the financial sustainability of the electricity sector
stakeholders while at the same time ensuring supply of reliable and competitively priced
energy,” ERC noted in a statement.
