    Police probe MP Mwirigi for assault on Kenya Power officials and police in Meru

    Police are investigating an incident where Igembe South MP Paul John Mwirigi stormed a police station and assaulted police officers and Kenya Power officials.

    The MP is said to have stormed Maua police station while seeking the release of his personal assistant who had been arrested on Monday January 19 evening.

    According to police, he and his group assaulted two police officers and a Kenya Power officials in the drama.

    The Kenya Power officials said they were enroute to Athiru-Gaitu to remove illegal power lines when they were blocked by a man who claimed to be an assistant to the MP.

    A search was conducted at his house and Kenya Power materials which included aluminium conductors, two transformers fuses, iron climbers and a safety belt were recovered from the scene.

    He was later arrested for grilling and booked at the Maua police station, police said.

    As the team was recording the statements, the MP reportedly arrived there in the company of a mob and demanded the release of his personal assistant.

    This caused commotion and two police officers and the Kenya Power staff were roughed up and wounded, police said.

    The group later left the scene without their target. The injured were attended to in hospital and issued with P3 forms.

    Police said they are investigating the MP and his group for assault and malicious damage.

    There was no comment from the MP over the claims as his mobile phone rang unanswered.

    This is not the first time that Kenya Power officials are assaulted while on duty. Such incidents happen in many places as the officials are accused of disconnecting power that they had connected.

    The incidents are under investigation. Other customers have cited corruption for the incidents.
