The government has announced significant progress in preparations for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, set to take place in Homa Bay County.

The Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, who also chairs the National Celebrations Steering Committee, confirmed that key infrastructure works are well underway ahead of the June 1 event.

Raila Odinga Stadium, the official venue for the celebrations, is currently being upgraded through a partnership between the State Department for Sports and Sports Kenya.

The construction of public terraces and the refurbishment of the pavilion are more than 70 percent complete.

Work on designated parking areas has reached 60 percent, while the extension of the stadium’s perimeter wall is 80 percent done.

In support of the celebrations, the State Department for Roads and its agencies are overseeing extensive roadworks across Homa Bay.

More than 35 kilometers of roads are being constructed or rehabilitated to improve accessibility and traffic flow.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is upgrading the 1.2-kilometer Homa Bay Pier–Stadium road and the 2-kilometer access road to the County Government Headquarters in Arujo.

The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) is grading the 11-kilometer Wahambla–Imbo Road and the 12-kilometer Ruga–Lala Road. Meanwhile, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is working on 10.8 kilometers of roads around the stadium.

Renovation works are also ongoing at the County Commissioner’s Residence, which will host the official State Garden Party.

The residence is undergoing rehabilitation of the main house, staff quarters, ablution blocks, gazebo, and external areas including roads, pavements, water tanks, and a perimeter wall, with more than 75 percent of the work completed.

The government, through the Kenya Airports Authority and the State Department for Transport, is also upgrading Kabunde Airstrip to support the event.

The fencing of both ends of the runway has been completed, while the runway extension is 70 percent done. Additionally, work on the passenger terminal building, apron, and taxiways is underway with support from the State Department for Public Works.

“Our primary target is to deliver a successful and memorable Madaraka Day celebration that not only honors our freedom fighters but also reflects the unity and progress of our nation,” said Dr. Omollo.

He thanked the Homa Bay County Government and local residents for their support in preparations for the event.

This year’s Madaraka Day will be marked under the theme “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs”, highlighting Kenya’s focus on harnessing aquatic resources for sustainable development and economic transformation.
