Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has questioned the recent decision by the Nairobi County Government to change the principal banker for its health facilities from Cooperative Bank to Sidian Bank.

According to an internal notice dated November 5, 2025, the county made the switch following a County Executive Committee meeting held on October 28.

The notice, addressed to all County Executive Officers in Level 4 and 5 hospitals and officers in charge of health facilities, directed them to open new accounts with Sidian Bank.

“Kindly attach all the required documents and submit the completed forms to the office of the County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning by November 7, 2025,” the notice read, urging for urgent compliance.

However, Senator Sifuna has raised concerns over the move, questioning why the county abandoned Cooperative Bank — a tier-one financial institution — for Sidian Bank, which is classified as tier-three.

    Sifuna

“The health facilities in Nairobi have been banking with Cooperative Bank, a tier-one bank with a solid history and reputation,” Sifuna said.

“How you wake up one day and direct all of them to move to a tier-three bank cannot be explained any other way than that corruption is at play.”

Officials from Nairobi County are yet to respond to the claims.
