Quickmart Supermarket has dismissed claims circulating online that several people were killed at its OTC branch in Nairobi’s Central Business District during the June 25 protests.
In a statement released on Thursday, the retail chain confirmed that its OTC and Ruiru branches were broken into during the chaos but firmly denied that any casualties occurred.
“We wish to assure the public that no staff, customers, or any other individuals were injured or deceased at the two outlets,” the statement read in part.
The clarification comes after social media users shared photos of police officers gathered outside the OTC branch, prompting speculation that bodies were being recovered from the premises. Some online reports suggested police were covering up fatalities linked to the protests.
Quickmart, however, emphasized that the safety of its employees, customers, and surrounding communities remained its top priority.
“Contrary to misleading information circulating on digital platforms, there were no injuries or deaths at any of our affected branches,” the supermarket said.
The retailer added that efforts to resume operations at the two branches were underway and encouraged customers to seek services at nearby Quickmart locations in the meantime.
The statement followed concerns raised by prominent activist Hanifa Adan, who posted screenshots from protesters expressing fear that something sinister had occurred at the OTC branch. One message even alleged that up to 30 bodies were being retrieved from the supermarket and that police had blocked access to the scene.
“What’s going on at Quickmart? Goodness,” Hanifa wrote on X, adding that she had received multiple messages from distressed protesters.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had earlier stated that more than 10 people were killed during the protests, which turned violent in several parts of the country, including Nairobi.
