Ruto And Raila Step In To Halt Sakaja Impeachment Push

President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday moved to calm tensions over a plan to impeach Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, urging leaders to focus on service delivery instead of political fights.

At State House, President Ruto met UDA Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and warned them against pushing the motion to remove Sakaja. He reminded them that leadership requires patience and resilience.

“I have been the most accused person, but I never allowed that to derail my work. I urge you to put aside differences and drop this motion,” Ruto told the MCAs.

At the same time, Raila Odinga held a meeting in Nairobi with ODM MPs and MCAs, chaired by veteran politician Fred Gumo and attended later by Sakaja. The leaders agreed not to back the impeachment, saying it was a distraction that could destabilize the capital.

“Nairobi must not be held hostage by political brinkmanship. Leaders must rise above partisan agendas to deliver for the people,” Raila said.

Governor Sakaja, elected on a UDA ticket but often relying on ODM’s numbers in the assembly, has faced criticism from some of his allies. Last year, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua accused him of abandoning his community for the opposition.

But Sakaja has defended his inclusive approach. “Nairobi is a cosmopolitan city. We cannot allow tribal politics here. We must work with both government and opposition to deliver for our people,” he has often said.

Sakaja has worked closely with both Ruto and Raila, from hosting the President during a development tour to visiting Raila in Bondo. He has described Nairobi as the “home” of the broad-based government.
