The Senate Committee on Delegated Legislation has accused Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana of deliberately avoiding a planned oversight meeting, warning that they will take strong action against what they termed as defiance of parliamentary authority.

Speaking after a county inspection tour, the Committee said the Governor failed to show up for a meeting despite receiving official communication about the engagement nearly a month ago.

According to Committee Chairperson, Tharaka Nithi Senator Mwenda Gataya, the Governor was aware of the Senate team’s arrival and deliberately left his office.

“We were shocked to find Governor Dhadho missing from his office when we arrived,” said Senator Gataya.

“This is a man whose administration is enforcing several questionable regulations. Our goal was to gather information, but he chose to run away from his oversight responsibilities.”

Gataya said the Governor must be held personally accountable, adding that Senate will not allow any leader to avoid scrutiny. “If he thinks he can hide, he is wrong. The Senate will confront him until he respects the law,” he said.

The Senators declined to meet with the Deputy Governor, insisting that only Governor Dhadho could respond to their queries.

They questioned why out of the four Governors they had scheduled to meet—only Governor Dhadho failed to appear.

“This is not a casual visit. We are representing the Senate to protect devolution and ensure counties follow the Constitution,” said Gataya.

“If Governor Dhadho believes he can get away with impunity, he is in for a rude awakening. The Senate will exercise its powers fully.”

Earlier, the Senate team met with members of the Tana River County Assembly’s Delegated Legislation Committee and praised the MCAs for their cooperation.

The Committee urged the Assembly to tighten its oversight work to ensure that county laws comply with national standards.

The Senate Committee has been touring Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Tana River counties.
