A senior police officer was found dead under unclear circumstances inside his vehicle at Ikonge Market in Nyamira County.

According to the police, members of the public alerted authorities after noticing a suspicious vehicle that had been parked for an extended period along the Nyamira–Kericho road.

Police officers from Ekerenyo, alongside detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, responded to the scene and discovered an unresponsive man locked inside the car.

They broke a window to gain access and found the lifeless body of Chief Inspector Allan Kimeli Kandie lying on the front seats.

Police said the body had no visible injuries, though mucus was observed oozing from his nose. An empty 250ml bottle of alcohol was recovered from beneath the passenger seat.

Preliminary investigations identified the deceased as the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kibugat Police Station in Kericho County. It was established that he had left his home earlier that morning at around 3:00 a.m Sunday March 29. It is not clear where he was headed.

The body was moved to Our Lady of Mercy Ibaraa Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

The vehicle was towed to Ekerenyo Police Station for further investigation.

Authorities have launched inquiries into the incident. His colleagues describe him as a good officer.

And a 35-year-old woman died following a fire outbreak at her rented house in Mukinduri shopping centre, Kirinyaga County.

According to police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 30, 2026.

The fire was reported by a member of the public at around 1:45 a.m. who attempted to put out the blaze that had engulfed the sitting room.

Police officers from Mutitu visited the scene and discovered the lifeless body of Penninah Wambui Karimi lying in the sitting room with visible burn injuries.

Authorities noted that a severely burnt couch—believed to be where the deceased had been seated—was found inside the house, alongside other household items destroyed by the fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established, though a matchbox was recovered from the scene. Investigations are ongoing.

The body was moved to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
