Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been under a lot of pressure since entering office to work on transforming and improving the city of Nairobi.
One of the issues on his agenda is the current hawker situation which has added to the congestion in the CBD.
As a result the Nairobi governor has directed Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe to work with the Director of Trade in finding a permanent location for hawkers to apply their trade.

Sonko added that he is indeed looking for streets where hawkers can be accommodated while he makes plans to build stalls.
“We will not chase you from the city center…we will look for places to take you first. This is where my votes came from. I started fighting for hawkers when i was Makadara MP. I will not change not that i am governor,” Sonko said.
This follows a suspended ban set out by the Governor Sonko preventing matatus from accessing the CBD.
As a temporary precaution Sonko has issued a directive that there shall be no double parking, no obstruction, no unnecessary U-turns, no noise pollution in the CBD and no blocking of premises.
