Stephen Baldwin is an American actor, producer, director, author and Christian minister who has an estimated net worth of $1 million. He is the youngest of the four Baldwin brothers, all of whom pursued careers in acting.

Baldwin became widely known for his role as William F. Cody in the Western television series “The Young Riders.” He later established himself in Hollywood with appearances in films including “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Posse,” “8 Seconds,” “Threesome” and “Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle.”

His most acclaimed film performance came in the 1995 crime thriller “The Usual Suspects,” in which he played Michael McManus. The film became a critical and commercial success and remains one of Baldwin’s best-known acting credits.

However, Baldwin’s mainstream Hollywood career slowed after a series of less successful films, including “Bio-Dome” and “The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.” He subsequently focused more heavily on independent films, reality television, Christian entertainment and ministry work.

Baldwin’s finances have also been affected by significant tax and mortgage problems. His financial difficulties included tax debts, bankruptcy proceedings, mortgage defaults and the eventual foreclosure of his longtime New York home.

    Early Life

Stephen Andrew Baldwin was born on May 12, 1966, in Massapequa, New York.

He was raised in a Catholic household by his mother, Carol, and father, Alexander Baldwin, who worked as a high school teacher and football coach.

Stephen grew up alongside his brothers Alec, Daniel and William Baldwin, as well as his sisters Elizabeth and Jane. His three brothers also went on to become professional actors.

During high school, Baldwin competed on the varsity wrestling team. After graduating, he studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.

    Early Acting Career

Baldwin made his television debut in 1987 with an appearance on the PBS anthology series “American Playhouse.”

He subsequently made guest appearances on television programs including “Family Ties,” “Kate & Allie” and “China Beach.”

His early film credits included “Homeboy” and “The Beast,” followed by appearances in “Last Exit to Brooklyn” and Oliver Stone’s “Born on the Fourth of July” in 1989.

That same year, Baldwin landed the role that gave him his first major television exposure.

    The Young Riders

In 1989, Baldwin joined the cast of the ABC Western series “The Young Riders.”

He played William F. Cody, a fictionalized version of the legendary frontiersman Buffalo Bill Cody.

The series followed a group of Pony Express riders in the years before the American Civil War. Baldwin appeared in 67 episodes during the show’s three-season run.

The role established him as a recognizable young actor and helped open the door to larger film opportunities in the 1990s.

    1990s Film Career

After “The Young Riders” ended, Baldwin concentrated increasingly on feature films.

He appeared in “Crossing the Bridge” in 1992 before taking a role in Mario Van Peebles’ Western “Posse” in 1993.

In 1994, Baldwin portrayed professional rodeo rider Tuff Hedeman in the biographical drama “8 Seconds.”

He also starred in the romantic comedy “Threesome” alongside Lara Flynn Boyle and Josh Charles and appeared in “Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle.”

Baldwin’s career reached its most significant point in 1995 when he appeared in “The Usual Suspects.”

    The Usual Suspects

Baldwin played Michael McManus in “The Usual Suspects,” a crime thriller featuring Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio del Toro, Kevin Pollak and Chazz Palminteri.

The movie follows a group of criminals who become involved in a mysterious scheme connected to the legendary crime boss Keyser Söze.

“The Usual Suspects” became a major critical success and developed into one of the most acclaimed crime films of the 1990s.

Baldwin and the principal cast received the National Board of Review Award for Best Acting by an Ensemble.

The film remains arguably the most celebrated project of Baldwin’s acting career.

    Bio-Dome and Later Movies

In 1996, Baldwin starred alongside Pauly Shore in the comedy “Bio-Dome.”

Although the movie later developed a cult following, it received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics.

Baldwin continued appearing in films throughout the late 1990s, including “Fled,” “Scar City,” “One Tough Cop,” “Friends & Lovers” and “Half Baked.”

In 2000, he portrayed Barney Rubble in “The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.” The movie was both a critical and commercial disappointment.

Although Baldwin continued receiving acting work, many of his subsequent projects were independent films, television movies and direct-to-video productions.

His later credits included “Cutaway,” “Slap Shot 2: Breaking the Ice,” “Jesse Stone: Night Passage,” “Harpies” and “The Flyboys.”

    Reality Television Career

As Baldwin’s mainstream movie opportunities declined, he became increasingly active in reality television.

He appeared on “Celebrity Mole Hawaii” in 2003 and returned for “Celebrity Mole Yucatán” in 2004.

In 2007, Baldwin participated in “Ty Murray’s Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge.” His participation ended after he suffered a broken shoulder blade and a cracked rib during training.

He competed on the first season of “The Celebrity Apprentice” in 2008, finishing fifth. He later returned for “All-Star Celebrity Apprentice” in 2013.

Baldwin also appeared on “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” in 2009 and the British version of “Celebrity Big Brother” in 2010.

His Christian faith became a prominent part of his reality television appearances, with Baldwin frequently discussing religion and reading the Bible during his time on “Celebrity Big Brother.”

    Faith and Ministry

    Baldwin became a born-again Christian around 2001.

His religious beliefs eventually became a major influence on both his personal life and professional career.

He became involved in youth ministry and Christian entertainment and directed and co-produced the 2004 documentary “Livin’ It.”

The project combined extreme sports, including skateboarding and BMX, with Christian messages aimed at young people.

Baldwin subsequently spent several years touring with athletes and presenting events at churches across the United States.

He also co-founded Breakthrough Ministry and participated in outreach programs designed to introduce Christianity to young audiences.

Baldwin later established Antioch Ministry and Now More Than Ever, an organization focused on outreach to members of the military.

His religious work contributed to his decision to move away from the pursuit of conventional Hollywood stardom.

    Christian Film Career

Baldwin increasingly turned to faith-based entertainment and independent filmmaking.

In 2019, he portrayed Australian missionary Graham Staines in “The Least of These: The Graham Staines Story.”

He later appeared in and produced the Christian comedy “Church People.”

In 2024, Baldwin played Pastor Ken Strickler in the drama “A Carpenter’s Prayer.”

He has continued working on faith-oriented projects while maintaining his acting career.

    One Bad Movie Podcast

In 2024, Baldwin launched the podcast “One Bad Movie.”

The podcast features actors and other entertainment personalities discussing movies that were unsuccessful, difficult to make, poorly received or eventually developed cult followings.

The project has provided Baldwin with another avenue to remain active in the entertainment industry outside traditional film and television.

    Stephen Baldwin’s Financial Problems

Baldwin and his wife, Kennya, purchased a home in Upper Grandview, New York, for approximately $515,000 in 1997.

They later refinanced the property and took on additional loans.

By 2009, the property faced foreclosure proceedings after the couple reportedly defaulted on more than $824,000 owed to a mortgage lender.

That same year, Baldwin filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

He listed more than $2.3 million in debt, including approximately $1.2 million in mortgage obligations, around $70,000 in credit-card debt and more than $1 million in tax liabilities.

The bankruptcy case was eventually dismissed in 2011 after the IRS accused Baldwin of failing to meet several court requirements.

    Tax Debt

Baldwin’s financial problems extended to unpaid state taxes.

In December 2012, he was arrested for failing to file New York state income-tax returns for 2008, 2009 and 2010.

He pleaded guilty in 2013 and agreed to pay approximately $400,000 in taxes, interest and penalties.

Baldwin completed the payments in April 2014 after receiving financial assistance from a friend.

By settling the debt before the court deadline, he avoided probation.

    Foreclosure of New York Home

Deutsche Bank filed another foreclosure lawsuit against Baldwin and his wife in 2013.

By 2016, the bank claimed that the mortgage debt on the Upper Grandview property had increased to approximately $1.1 million.

Baldwin challenged the foreclosure, but a judge ultimately ordered the property sold.

A foreclosure deed was recorded in 2017, ending the family’s ownership of the home.

The financial difficulties have played a significant role in Baldwin’s overall net worth and explain why his estimated wealth remains considerably lower than that of some of his siblings.

    Kevin Costner Lawsuit

Baldwin was also involved in a high-profile legal dispute with actor Kevin Costner.

In 2010, Baldwin and businessman Spyridon Contogouris sued Costner and his business partner Patrick Smith over Ocean Therapy Solutions.

The company marketed technology designed to separate oil from water.

Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, BP agreed to place an $18 million deposit toward a $52 million order for 32 machines.

Baldwin and Contogouris alleged that Costner and Smith concealed BP’s interest in the technology until after they had sold their ownership stakes.

Baldwin reportedly received approximately $1.4 million for his shares.

The plaintiffs later sought approximately $17 million in damages.

In June 2012, however, a federal jury ruled in favor of Costner and Smith after less than two hours of deliberation.

Baldwin and Contogouris received no damages.

    Personal Life

Stephen Baldwin married Brazilian graphic designer Kennya Deodato on June 10, 1990.

Kennya is the daughter of Grammy-winning Brazilian musician Eumir Deodato.

The couple have two daughters, Alaia and Hailey.

Alaia was born in 1993, while Hailey was born in 1996.

Hailey later became internationally known as a model and married Canadian singer Justin Bieber in 2018.

Stephen Baldwin is also a grandfather. Alaia has a daughter named Iris, while Hailey and Justin have a son named Jack.

    Political Views

Baldwin has been outspoken about his political beliefs and has supported Donald Trump during multiple presidential elections.

He has also discussed his decision to move away from political advocacy and focus more heavily on his family, faith, ministry and entertainment projects.

    Awards and Recognition

Baldwin’s most notable acting recognition came in 1995 when he and the cast of “The Usual Suspects” received the National Board of Review Award for Best Acting by an Ensemble.

The cast also received an ensemble award from the Awards Circuit Community Awards.

Baldwin received a DVD Exclusive Award nomination for Best Actor for “Slap Shot 2: Breaking the Ice.”

He also earned a supporting-actor nomination at the Hoboken International Film Festival for “The Flyboys.”
