Sting’s $300 Million Song Catalog Sale

One of the biggest financial moments of Sting’s career came in February 2022, when he sold his entire songwriting catalog to Universal Music Publishing Group for an estimated $300 million.

The deal included publishing rights to both his solo music and songs recorded with The Police, giving Universal ownership of classics such as:

    • Every Breath You Take
    • Roxanne
    • Message in a Bottle
    • Fields of Gold
    • Englishman in New York
    • Desert Rose

The sale significantly boosted Sting’s already impressive fortune and placed him among musicians who have earned massive payouts from music rights transactions.

    Early Life

Sting was born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner on October 2, 1951, in Wallsend, Northumberland, England. Raised in a working-class family, his mother worked as a hairdresser while his father earned a living as an engineer and milkman.

Before music became his full-time career, Sting worked several jobs, including as a tax officer, laborer, and bus conductor. He later trained as a teacher and taught primary school after attending the Northern Counties College of Education.

During his free time, however, he pursued jazz and played with local bands in Newcastle. His famous nickname, “Sting,” reportedly came from a black-and-yellow sweater he often wore that made him resemble a bee.

    The Police

In 1977, Sting moved to London and formed The Police with Stewart Copeland and guitarist Henry Padovani, who was later replaced by Andy Summers.

Their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour (1978), introduced fans to Roxanne and Can’t Stand Losing You. Follow-up albums like Reggatta de Blanc, Ghost in the Machine, and Synchronicity turned the group into global superstars.

Their final studio album, Synchronicity (1983), featured Every Breath You Take, which became one of the biggest songs of the decade and remains one of the most profitable songs ever written.

Though Sting left the band to pursue solo work, The Police reunited for a hugely successful world tour in 2007, generating hundreds of millions in ticket sales.

    Sting’s Solo Career

Sting’s solo career proved just as successful as his time with The Police. His debut solo album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, showcased jazz influences and featured collaborations with renowned musicians like Branford Marsalis.

Over the years, he released numerous successful albums, including:

    • …Nothing Like the Sun (1987)
    • Ten Summoner’s Tales (1993)
    • Mercury Falling (1996)
    • Brand New Day (1999)
    • My Songs (2019)

Songs such as Fields of Gold, If I Ever Lose My Faith in You, and Desert Rose helped establish him as one of music’s most versatile artists.

Beyond music, Sting also earned acclaim in theater for The Last Ship, a musical inspired by his childhood in Northern England.

How Much Does “Every Breath You Take” Earn Sting?

One of Sting’s greatest financial assets has been Every Breath You Take, the 1983 hit often described as one of the most profitable songs in history.

The song gained a second life in 1997, when rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs sampled it for I’ll Be Missing You, a tribute to the late rapper Notorious B.I.G.

Because Sting held 100% songwriting credit, he reportedly secured all publishing royalties from the remake after permission issues emerged during production.

The track continues to generate substantial income, reportedly earning Sting thousands of dollars per day in royalties, making it one of the biggest contributors to his fortune.

    Acting, Awards, and Recognition

Beyond music, Sting has enjoyed a career in acting and entertainment. He appeared in films including Dune, Brüno, and Bee Movie, while also contributing songs to major soundtracks.

Throughout his career, Sting has received numerous honors, including:

    • 17 Grammy Awards
    • A Golden Globe Award
    • A Primetime Emmy Award
    • Four Academy Award nominations
    • Kennedy Center Honors
    • Songwriters Hall of Fame induction

He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000.

    Personal Life

Sting was first married to actress Frances Tomelty, with whom he shares two children. Following their divorce, he married actress and producer Trudie Styler in 1992. Together, they have four children.

Outside of entertainment, Sting is deeply involved in activism. In 1989, he and Styler co-founded the Rainforest Foundation Fund, supporting Indigenous communities and rainforest conservation.

He has also supported organizations focused on human rights, HIV/AIDS awareness, climate causes, and humanitarian relief.

    Sting’s Real Estate Portfolio

Sting has invested heavily in luxury real estate over the years.

In 2008, he and Trudie purchased a luxury penthouse near Central Park in New York City for nearly $27 million. They later sold the property for approximately $50 million.

The couple has also owned homes in:

    • England
    • Italy
    • Malibu, California

Their Malibu beachfront mansion has reportedly been rented for as much as $200,000 per month during peak seasons.
