Tharaka Nithi governor Muthomi Njuki has suspended 1061 county employees in a move that he says will reduce the county’s wage bill which is too high.

The suspended workers include 660 casual laborers in the different departments,289 on open contracts and about 112 nurses in open employment.

He said that the casual laborers were under employment but never reported to their work stations.

He said the 112 nurses were employed without following due process to replace the 600 nurses that were on strike and that the 289 were not qualified for the jobs.

The governor further complained that the nurses employed were quacks and relatives of senior workers at the county.

Governor Muthomi has followed the footsteps of his Machakos counterpart, Alfred Mutua who suspended 437 workers over what he termed as a move to get rid of lazy staff.
