Two people died following a gold mine collapse in Migori County.
According to police, the incident occurred on March 14, 2026 at around 7:00 am at Kehancha Chini, opposite Kehancha Primary School in Kuria West Sub-County.
Preliminary findings indicate that four mine supervisors had descended about 100 metres underground to inspect the condition of the mine before other workers could begin their shift. While inside the mine, part of the wall suddenly collapsed, causing debris to fall on them.
Other workers at the site managed to rescue the four supervisors from the mine.
One of them escaped unhurt while another one sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged.
However, two of the supervisors—Marwa Chacha Chacha, 22, and Protus Mariba Kemege, 35—succumbed to severe head injuries sustained during the collapse.
The injured were rushed to Kehancha Sub County Hospital where the deaths were confirmed.
Police processed the scene before moving the bodies of the deceased to the hospital mortuary, where they are awaiting post-mortem examination as investigations into the incident continue.
Elsewhere, police in Nyamira County are investigating an electrocution incident that claimed the life of a 38-year-old woman at Riowangwa Village.
Police said the incident was reported on March 14, 2026 at about 2:00 pm by a man, who informed authorities that his spouse had died at their home in Riowangwa Village, Siamani Sub-location within Bonyamatuta Chache Location.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, led by the station police commander, visited the scene and established that the deceased, identified as Edna Nyantugo, a Kisii woman aged 38 years, was found lying lifeless within the family compound.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the woman had come from the bathroom and attempted to hang washed clothes on a wire within the compound. However, the wire had reportedly been accidentally connected to a live electric line, leading to instant electrocution.
Police said the husband had earlier left for church when the incident occurred. At around 10:00 am, their 11-year-old daughter reportedly went to the church to inform him that her mother had fallen down and was not waking up, prompting the report to the police.
The body, which had multiple burn injuries, was later moved to Nyamira County Referral Hospital mortuary where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
