At least two people were shot dead in two separate shooting incidents in Meru County.

This comes amid concerns of rising cases of attacks by gunmen out for revenge or to steal livestock in the area, police said.

Police said the first incident happened on Sunday September 21, 2025 night in Kinnameru, Mutuati area where one Warigi Osman Diba, 41 was shot and killed by gunmen who raided the area.

The gunmen also shot and injured another man in the stomach before they escaped.

The motive of the attack was not immediately known, police said. The injured man was rushed to the hospital and admitted in serious but stable condition.

The police said they visited the scene and recovered two spent cartridges of 7.62 by 39 mm special. The cartridges were sent to the ballistic experts for analysis.

The body of the man was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and investigations.

In Buuri, Meru County, one Nahashon Muthaura, 48 was shot and killed in Maili Tano Shopping Centre by unknown gunmen.

The man was headed home on Sunday night when he was shot and killed by the roadside.

The body had a gunshot wound on the back which had exited through the chest. A similar spent cartridge was recovered from the scene, police said.

The motive of the shooting was not immediately known. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and investigations.

Locals are calling on police to take measures and protect them from marauding gunmen in the area. The gunmen have left a trail of deaths and injuries in the past days in a series of attacks.

Police say they are pursuing the matter.

The area is among those under Operation Maliza Uhalifu aimed at dealing with bandits.

The operation has managed to contain crime in the area and other counties amid persistence.

The operation targets Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru and Isiolo counties.

Besides retributive reaction, strategic investment and sustainable development have also taken a prominent place among the government’s planned crime control interventions for Kenya’s Northern frontier and the Kerio Valley belt.
