Two secondary school students were shot by police on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, during anti-government protests in Molo, Nakuru County.
According to a police report, one of the victims, a 17-year-old Form Three student at Njenga Karume Secondary School, was fatally shot as officers tried to disperse demonstrators.
The second student, from Turi Secondary School, sustained leg injuries, while a bullet on the stomach grazed another protester. He received treatment but declined to identify himself before leaving the hospital.
The protests in Molo began at around 9:30 a.m., when more than 500 youths gathered in the town. Police say the crowd swelled to over 800 people by midday and turned violent, blocking the Molo-Elburgon road with bonfires and throwing stones at passing vehicles.
In the chaos, a GSU officer from Jolly Farm lost a tooth after being hit by a stone while attempting to manage the situation. Protesters also tried to torch a police vehicle, damaging its front windscreen.
Officers reportedly fired shots into the air to disperse the rioters, but a stray bullet struck and fatally wounded 17-year-old Dennis Njuguna Ngugi, the Form Three student.
Two other individuals, including 19-year-old Frank Mirithu Kikuy, sustained injuries.
“At around 5pm hours the riotous mob now numbering about 2000 converged at Molo Police Station and tried to overrun the station and They burnt down the police dog kennel, they also looted Coca-Cola kiosk at the station gate, Market stalls and numerous shops and stole properties of unknown value,” police report says.
Police said reinforcements arrived from Njoro, Kuresoi South, and the GSU to help contain the situation. However, the mob later targeted the Molo Sub-County municipal offices, where they set fire to a fire engine, a water bowser, three vehicles, and a tractor.
By 8:00 p.m., the protesters had broken into Capital Supermarket, cutting through its doors and looting goods of unknown value. Three suspects were arrested with stolen items during the police response.
Efforts to recover stolen property and arrest other culprits are ongoing. Authorities also reported an attempt by some of the group to attack the home of the area Member of Parliament, but they were repulsed by security teams already deployed in the area.
The body of the deceased student has been moved to the Molo Sub-County Mortuary pending a postmortem. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been notified and is expected to begin investigations.
At least eight people were killed and 207 injured in Wednesday’s June 25 protests across the country.
The protests were called to commemorate the 2024 Finance Bill protests in which more than 60 people were killed.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) said a number of injuries among police officers were also documented.
There were at least 61 suspected protestors across the country.
Further, there was infiltration of demonstrations by goons.
This led to looting of property in many places.
Those killed were shot in Nairobi, Emali, Molo and other parts of the country.
The protests were held in 24 counties and later turned chaotic. Property were looted and others destroyed.
