Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee. She was the fourth of 12 children born to Robert Lee Parton Sr. and Avie Lee Owens Parton.
Her father worked as a tobacco farmer and construction worker, while her mother cared for their large family in a small cabin near the Great Smoky Mountains.
Parton often spoke about growing up poor. However, she also described her childhood as a period filled with music, religion, family stories and creativity.
