    Maasai Male Rites Of Passage Listed For Protection Under UNESCO

    UNESCO has inscribed three Maasai rites of passage: Enkipaata, Eunoto and Olng’esherr on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.

    The main aim of this listing is to encourage and ensure international co-operation in the safeguarding of the intangible cultures which are under threat of changing times in the world, despite efforts by communities to keep it alive.

    The listing helps to bring awareness of the culture, encourage dialogue that promotes embaracing of diverse cultures and even brings in funds to the communities involved, so they can sustain the culture.

    Other cultures that have been listed as in need o urgenf safeguarding include Reggae music from Jamaica, hand puppetry from Egypt and Pottery skills of the women of Sejnane from Tunisia among others.

    United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the cultural agency of the United Nations, made the announcement earlier today.
