Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Monday raised alarm over irrelevant degree courses offered in Kenyan Universities that no single student selected during the University and College placement exercise.

Speaking during the release of 2019/2020 universities and colleges student placement results, the CS noted that 98 programmes offered by at least 40 universities did not get any placement.

Although there were applicants, no student was selected to pursue the courses since they either did not qualify or were placed to one of their other choices.

He ordered the review of the university curriculum to do away with such courses, adding that  universities must be market oriented.

“I might be forced to shut some public universities this year and send some lecturers home. We cannot continue having irrelevant courses in our institutions that no single student has chosen for years,” Magoha said during an event by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service.

Among the 98 courses, statistics released by KUCCPS reveals 9 courses that attracted zero applications from the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates.

    Here is the list.

    1. African Nazarene University – Bachelor of Theology with a capacity of 40 students

    2. Co-operative University – Bachelor of Social Work and Community Development with a capacity of 300 learners

Meanwhile, a total of 1,269 students qualified for degree courses (C+ and above) but applied for diploma courses and were placed based on their choices.

This year a total of 89,486 students were placed to degree programmes in public and private universities.

Further, a total of 98,393 applicants were selected to join Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions.
