Kenya’s second President Daniel Arap Moi, died on Tuesday morning and through a presidential proclamation, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced his passing.

Moi served as president for 24 years before handing over the reins of power to Mwai Kibaki.

During his tenure, Moi was deputized by four vice presidents, two of whom are still alive. Here is a list of the Vice Presidents who served under him:

    Josephat Karanja.

Josephat Karanja was Kenya’s fifth vice president who served between 1988-1989 and died in 1994.

His political career picked up following his association with people from the West mainly the US and Britain and was accused of wanting to overthrow the then president, Daniel Moi.

He, however, resigned in a bid to avoid a vote-of-no-confidence in the Parliament.

The majority of people did not resonate with his political ideologies, as he was accused of relating more with the Western culture than what the country needed.

Ideally, one thing that stood out during his time was his public display of his wife, who was a Ugandan foreign.

    George Saitoti.

George Saitoti became Kenya’s sixth Vice president, following 1988 General Elections that saw him serve as the longest second in command.

He served for 13 years, between May 1989-1998 and again between April 1999 and August 2002, with his tenure going down in history as former President Moi’s most trusted Lieutenant.

Saitoti died on June 10, 2012, after a helicopter crash with allegations that it was an assassination.

He also served as Minister for Finance and was the Executive Chairman of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) between 1990-1991.

Mudavadi served as the seventh Vice President of Kenya in 2002 and goes in history as the shortest-serving under Moi.

His appointment came about as an attempt by the Kenya African National Union (KANU) to secure Western Kenya Votes.

Mudavadi has served as the Deputy Prime Minister between 2008 and 2012 during the coalition government of former President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga.

He was also the running mate in President Uhuru’s 2002 attempt in the Presidential seat.

Kibaki served as the third President of Kenya, after having served as the Vice President under Moi for 10 years from 1978 to 1988.

He was also a Cabinet Minister in both Jomo Kenyatta (Finance Minister 1969-1981) and Moi governments (Home Affairs and Minister for Health).

Kibaki’s tenure as both Vice President and President go down in history encumbered with consistency, proficiency and economic growth.

Before being elected President in 2002, he served as an opposition member of parliament.
