    Early Life

Nick Ashford was born Nickolas Ashford on May 4, 1942, in Fairfield, South Carolina. His family later relocated to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he became deeply involved in church music at Christ Temple Baptist Church. There, he performed with the Hammond Singers, laying the foundation for his future career.

After graduating from Willow Run High School, Ashford pursued music full-time. In 1964, his life changed when he met Valerie Simpson at White Rock Baptist Church in Harlem—a meeting that would spark one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in music history.

    Ashford & Simpson

When Nick Ashford met Valerie Simpson, he was homeless. Together, they sold their first batch of songs for just $64. That modest start eventually led to a catalog of roughly 250 songs, generating massive long-term royalty income.

The duo initially found success as songwriters, penning hits for major artists including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Diana Ross. Their big break came at Motown Records, where Berry Gordy paired them with Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced classics such as:

    • “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”
    • “You’re All I Need to Get By”
    • “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”

These songs became cornerstones of Motown’s golden era and remain staples of popular music.

    Recording Career

In addition to songwriting, Ashford & Simpson enjoyed major success as recording artists. They released their debut album, “Gimme Something Real,” in 1973, followed by a string of Gold-certified albums.

    Career highlights include:

    • “Is It Still Good to Ya” (1978) – #1 on Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums
    • “Solid” (1984) – #1 R&B album and the duo’s biggest commercial hit
    • #1 R&B singles such as “Solid” and “Stuff Like That” (with Quincy Jones and Chaka Khan)
    • Multiple #1 Dance Club Songs, including “Found a Cure” and “Stay Free”

Their music dominated R&B, dance, and pop charts from the 1970s through the 1980s.

    Songwriting Legacy and Royalties

Nick Ashford’s net worth was largely driven by songwriting royalties. In 1998, he and Valerie Simpson made headlines by raising $10 million through a royalty-backed bond sale, using future earnings from their catalog—an innovative financial move inspired by David Bowie’s “Bowie Bonds.”

Their songs were recorded by legends such as:

    • Diana Ross
    • Chaka Khan (“I’m Every Woman”)
    • Teddy Pendergrass
    • Stephanie Mills

These compositions continue to generate revenue decades later.

    Later Career

Ashford also released solo singles, including “I Don’t Need No Doctor” and “California Soul,” and appeared in the 1991 crime film “New Jack City.”

In 2009, Ashford & Simpson revisited their signature hit with “Solid (As Barack),” celebrating President Barack Obama’s inauguration.

    Personal Life and Death

Nick Ashford married Valerie Simpson on November 30, 1974, and they remained together for nearly four decades. The couple had two daughters, Nicole and Asia.

Ashford passed away on August 22, 2011, at the age of 69, after battling throat cancer. He died surrounded by his wife and daughters.

    Nick Ashford Awards

Nick Ashford received widespread industry recognition, including:

    • Induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2002)
    • Grammy Trustees Award (2019, posthumous)
    • ASCAP Founders Award
    • Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Award

Ashford & Simpson were also ranked #19 on Rolling Stone’s “20 Greatest Duos of All Time.”

    Nick Ashford Net Worth
