Winnie Odinga Hints at Joining Local Politics

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member Winnie Odinga has hinted at returning to local politics following the death of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Speaking during Raila’s national funeral service at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday, Winnie expressed her gratitude to President William Ruto for standing with their family during the difficult period.

In a message that drew loud applause from mourners, Winnie appeared to suggest her readiness to rejoin the national political scene and work with the government.

“Your Excellency, our people appreciate your honouring my father. Thank you for standing with us,” she said. “You should also know, in case you are wondering, I am ready to return home.”

Her remarks were met with cheers, with many interpreting them as a signal that she might soon make a political comeback — possibly in collaboration with President Ruto’s administration as part of her father’s legacy of unity and dialogue.

Winnie also thanked Raila’s staff for their dedication and loyalty to the former Prime Minister throughout his political career and during his final days.

Currently serving as an EALA legislator, Winnie was nominated to the regional assembly by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party in 2022. Her statement has since sparked political debate over whether she could take up a more active role in national politics following Raila’s passing.

Meanwhile, Raila’s sister, Ruth Odinga, also took to the podium to recount her brother’s difficult early political journey, especially during the regime of former President Daniel arap Moi.

She recalled how Raila faced multiple arrests, detentions, and harassment, which eventually forced him into exile in Norway. “Raila became a refugee in Norway, staying with me. I am saying this to show you that this was a strong man. The family has suffered — Mama Ida has suffered because imagine all those years living without your husband,” Ruth said emotionally.

Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, passed away on October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in India. He was 80 years old.
