His father, Stuart, is involved in hockey as the chairman and governor of the Markham Royals and chairman of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL).
Zach’s younger brother Spencer is the assistant general manager and coach of the Markham Royals. His brother Oliver also has a hockey background, having played for the Hamilton Red Wings.
Career
Hyman’s hockey career is marked by consistent improvement and success at various levels, leading him to become a key player in the NHL.
Before reaching the NHL, he excelled in junior hockey, earning recognition as the Canadian Junior Hockey League Player of the Year in 2011.
He further honed his skills at the University of Michigan, where he was named the school’s Athlete of the Year and a First Team All-American in 2015.
Hyman began his NHL journey with the Toronto Maple Leafs. While his early seasons with the Leafs were characterized by steady growth, the 2017-18 season was a breakout year.

He was also named to the All-Big Ten First Team. In 2015, he received the All-American Athlete Award by The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NCSA) and EAS Sports Nutrition.
Hyman was also honored as one of five finalists for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup Award.
In 2015, Hyman earned the Bates/Deskins Award, given to the top junior student-athlete for achievement both academically and athletically.
He also received the Doc Losh Trophy as the team’s scoring leader, the Joseph E. Barss Award for the true team player, and the Carl Isaacson Trophy as the team’s best student-athlete.
He was a three-time Big Ten All-Academic selection and a two-time recipient of the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award.
