The initial stages for the Sh1.5 billion expansion of the Malindi Airport are underway and local residents have received compensation from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

According to reports, residents of Kwa Chocha South have been paid Sh300 million following their removal from the land.

Malindi Airport Manager Walter Agong is hoping to finalize compensation before the end of the year.

“We have compensated the first batch of people at a cost of Sh300 million, people are in the process of vacating, by the end of December we shall be done with the compensation which will have cost Sh420 million,’’ he said.

Agong says they have also finished mapping out the area reserved for the expansion of the airport.

“We already mapped the area for expansion of the runway, the report was handed over to the Kenya Airports Authority,” he said.

“The dream of making Malindi an international airport is real now we have a new apron which is 99 percent complete and will be ready in December to accommodate three code 4 c aeroplanes or four Boeing 737.”

Mining CS Dan Kazungu lauded KAA for their progress and highlighted how the development of the airport will be critical in boosting tourism in the area.
