AFC Leopards have confirmed the departure of Rwandan striker Arthur Gitego after both parties agreed to terminate his contract.

In a statement released on Tuesday, February 11, the club announced that Gitego’s exit comes after mutual consent, ending his stint at the club after just one year.

“We would like to confirm the release of our striker Arthur Gitego on mutual agreement. Arthur had penned a two-year contract upon joining the club on January 16, 2024, from Marines FC, Rwanda,” the club said in the statement.

Gitego was the top scorer in the 2023/24 FKF Cup with five goals and also managed three goals and one assist in the FKF Premier League.

AFC Leopards acknowledged his contribution to the team and wished him success in his future endeavors.

“We express our gratitude for his performance in the team. His expertise and dedication have played a significant role in the club. We wish Gitego the best in the next chapter of his career and thank him for his contribution,” the statement added.

Despite the club’s official stance, reports indicate that Gitego’s relationship with AFC Leopards had deteriorated due to alleged disciplinary issues.

The striker missed several matches towards the end of the season following a series of off-field incidents, one of which led to his brief detention by the police.

Sources suggest that Gitego had been pushing for a move away since November, particularly after the departure of former coach Tomas Trucha, who had recommended his release. However, AFC Leopards were reluctant to let him go, with a year still left on his contract.

“I asked them [to release me], but they refused,” Gitego told Rwandan publication Times Sport.

The striker also revealed that he had received multiple offers but claimed that AFC Leopards were unwilling to negotiate his exit.

“I had many offers, but they didn’t understand. They continue to play little tricks. I think I have no choice but to stay,” he added.

With Gitego’s exit now confirmed, several clubs are reportedly interested in signing him as he looks to restart his career away from the FKF Premier League giants.
