The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has asked the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to identify and investigate individuals and law enforcers who used excessive force during the Gen Z protests in 2024.

This follows the release of a BBC Africa Eye exposé dubbed “Blood Parliament” highlighting what happened during the demonstrations.

In a letter dated April 28, 2025, Deputy DPP Jacinta Nyamosi wrote to IPOA CEO, raising concerns over the revelations made in the documentary.

The BBC program focused on the events of June 25, 2024, when young protestors stormed Parliament during anti-finance bill demonstrations.

According to the DPP, the footage contains significant evidence showing how events unfolded and identifies several individuals seen accessing Parliament and engaging with security officers.

““This program raises concerns about potential breaches of the public order, as well as the use of force, possible misconduct, and the accountability of those involved – including security forces and protest participants,” the DPP said.

The DPP wants IPOA to investigate possible police misconduct, identify all perpetrators involved in the storming of Parliament, and ensure that the people captured in the documentary are protected and, if necessary, asked to provide official statements.

“This matter is of public interest and touches on the heart of our democratic values—freedom of expression, lawful assembly, and institutional accountability,” the letter added.
