The Senate Committee on Delegated Legislation has asked the Mombasa County Government to urgently review and update all its regulations to match current laws and improve public services.
During a meeting held in Mombasa on Tuesday with Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, the Committee, chaired by Senator Mwenda Gataya of Tharaka Nithi, said many of the existing county laws are outdated or have run past their validity, making it harder for the county to operate efficiently.
“We recommend a thorough review of all the county’s regulations to ensure that every operation is legally compliant,” said Senator Gataya.
“This will not only improve service delivery but also strengthen the legal foundation of your County’s operations.”
The Senators stressed that having up-to-date and clear regulations would help address governance issues and enhance transparency and accountability at the county level.
Governor Nassir welcomed the Senators’ recommendations and thanked them for their continued support.
He said his administration is committed to aligning all county policies with national legislation to improve the lives of Mombasa residents.
“We are grateful to the Senate for its oversight and support in strengthening Devolution,” said the Governor.
“My administration is committed to upholding the law and ensuring that our policies and regulations meet the standards set by legislation.”
Earlier in the day, the Committee met with members of the Mombasa County Assembly, led by the County Speaker. Their talks focused on devolution, legislative oversight, and the importance of passing laws that serve the people.
The MCAs, in turn, urged the Senate to support them in accessing more financial resources. They said adequate funding would enable them to perform their roles effectively and independently without pressure from the County Executive.
The Senate Committee will continue its tour on Wednesday with a scheduled visit to Kilifi County to hold similar meetings with local leaders.
