The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened applications for teachers with P1 or Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) certificates to upgrade their qualifications to diploma level.

In a statement on August 9, 2025, KUCCPS said the new programme is part of its efforts to expand opportunities for Kenyans to access higher education and training. It comes after the successful rollout of the Kenya School of Law’s Diploma in Law (Paralegal Studies) through the KUCCPS system, which this year attracted over 800 applicants for 500 slots.

Teachers can now apply for the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) by selecting their preferred Teacher Training College (TTC). Training will be offered on flexible schedules starting this month or during the November–December school holidays. Applicants must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The application window opened on August 6 and will run continuously, with brief breaks for processing. The first deadline is August 20, 2025.

According to KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome, the programme is designed to equip teachers with skills to meet the demands of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.
“This upgrade will ensure a steady supply of well-prepared teachers for the Competency-Based Curriculum, especially at the lower levels,” she said, urging all eligible teachers to take advantage of the opportunity.

Applications can be submitted through the KUCCPS portal at teachersupgrade.kuccps.ac.ke.

KUCCPS has also reopened applications for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions for the September 2025 intake. The TVET application period runs from August 8 to August 22, with the application fee reduced from Sh1,500 to Sh500 to encourage more applicants.
