A roads company engineer based in Kisumu died by suicide at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices in Kisumu.

Police said the incident happened Thursday October 30, 2025 morning.

He was identified as Juma Guya, the CEO of Gogni Rajope, a renowned construction company in the region.

The deceased, is reported to have jumped from the second floor of the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) mall, where KRA has its offices.

Reports indicate that the deceased had been slapped with a Sh300 million tax demand by KRA.

He went there for a discussion over the tax matters, witnesses said.

According to guards manning the Mall’ s gates, he arrived on Thursday morning and parked his car at the mall’s car park.

He then handed his keys saying his son would pick up the car.

“After parking, came back and handed over the car key that his son will come pick up the vehicle,” said one of the guards.

He later returned into the building, a few moments later, he jumped from the second floor in a suicide mission.

He died on the spot and police were alerted and collected his body to the mortuary pending postmortem examinations.

Police have since opened up investigations to ascertain what led to the incident.

The motive of the incident was not immediately known.

Police statistics show up to five cases are at times reported daily in the worrying trend.

Most of the victims are men, statistics show.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.

The government says efforts are being made to address the menace.
