At least six people were killed in a road accident involving a bus and a trailer in the notorious Tunnel area, Kericho County.

The accident happened along the Londiani-Fort Ternan stretch.

According to the police, at least 46 others were injured in the Tuesday incident and they are investigating the cause.

Kericho County police commander James Ngetich said the accident happened after the bus, belonging to Uwezo Sacco, rammed into the rear of the trailer.

Ngetich said the two vehicles were heading towards Kisumu direction.

According to the police, five passengers and the bus driver died on the spot, while the 46 passengers sustained serious injuries.

They were rushed to various hospitals.

Ngetich said of the injured, 13 sustained slight injuries, while others escaped unhurt and were treated and discharged.

Ngetich said they were yet to establish the circumstances which led to the accident, but investigations had been launched to establish the same.

The accident happened as a bus carrying students headed out of Nairobi overturned in Kimende area along Nairobi-Naivasha highway.

Police said 20 people sustained slight injuries.

The bus was ferrying students on January 6 who were travelling back to school.

The fatal injuries increased to more than 60, the number of those killed in separate accidents since new year, police said.

On Monday alone, 12 people were killed in separate accidents in the country, police said. They included four pillion passengers and three pedestrians.

The other victims were two drivers and two riders.

Police said nine people were injured in the accidents.

There is a campaign to address the accident menace in the country. Close to 5,000 people were killed in separate accidents in 2025.

Officials say reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving remain among the leading causes of road accidents across the country, continuing to claim lives despite sustained public safety campaigns by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Mechanical failures from poorly maintained vehicles, including worn tyres and faulty brakes, have also been identified as significant contributors to the growing number of crashes. In addition to driver negligence, poor road conditions—such as potholes, confusing signage, and inadequate lighting—make travel increasingly hazardous, particularly at night.
