Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan Abdi has joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), in a major political move ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Hassan was formally received into the party by Gachagua at the DCP headquarters on Tuesday, where he was presented with a DCP cap before supporters and party officials.

Speaking after joining the party, Hassan said he was seeking an outfit committed to addressing the challenges facing Kenyans.

“I am happy to join the DCP party because it is a party that wants the best for Kenyans. It is a party that wants change for Kenyans because they are tired of bad politics,” he said.

His move adds the veteran Nairobi politician to Gachagua’s growing political camp as the former Deputy President works to expand DCP’s national presence ahead of the 2027 polls.

Hassan was elected Kamukunji MP for a fourth consecutive term in the 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket.

He secured 34,264 votes, representing 56.23 per cent of the votes cast, defeating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Robow Hassan, who garnered 22,644 votes.

The MP first won the Kamukunji seat in 2011 on a Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket before moving to The National Alliance (TNA) in 2013 and later Jubilee Party in 2017.

His decision to join DCP marks a new political chapter after years of association with Jubilee.

Gachagua has in recent weeks stepped up political activities as he seeks to strengthen DCP and build a wider opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 election.

His Wamunyoro residence has increasingly become a centre for political consultations, with the former Deputy President hosting leaders, delegations and supporters from different parts of the country.

Gachagua has also intensified calls for opposition unity, arguing that the opposition stands a better chance of defeating President William Ruto by rallying behind a single presidential candidate.

Hassan’s decision to join DCP could influence political alignments in Kamukunji and Nairobi, where he has been a prominent political figure for more than a decade.

The move comes as political parties and leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with new alliances and party realignments expected to shape the contest.
