Nicolas Kiefer is a German former professional tennis player, born on 5 July 1977 in Holzminden, West Germany.

He began playing tennis at the age of six, trained in the Einbeck and Northeim area before advancing through Germany’s junior and performance systems, and turned professional in 1995.

He resided for much of his career in the Sievershausen area near Dassel and retired from the ATP Tour at the end of 2010 to focus on family life.

He later became involved in brand ambassadorship, tennis-related activities, and long-distance running.

    Siblings

Nicolas has a brother named David.

However, not much is known about David, including his career pursuits, as he lives a private life compared to his famous brother.

    Career

Kiefer enjoyed an outstanding junior career in 1995, winning the Australian Open and US Open boys’ singles titles, reaching the Wimbledon junior final and the French Open junior semifinals, and finishing the year as the world No. 2 junior.

He turned professional that same year and steadily rose through the rankings.

By the late 1990s he had established himself on the ATP Tour, capturing his first singles title in Toulouse in 1997.

He reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 4 on 10 January 2000.

Over a 15-year professional career he compiled a singles record of 366 wins and 274 losses, won six ATP singles titles, and added three doubles titles.

He represented Germany in the Davis Cup across multiple ties beginning in 1998 and competed in three Olympic Games (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008).

Injuries, particularly to the wrist, limited his later seasons, and he announced his retirement on 30 December 2010, citing a desire to spend more time with his family after the birth of his daughter.

    Accolades

Kiefer’s highest ranking of world No. 4 stands as one of the strongest career peaks achieved by a German player in the Open Era.

He reached the semifinals of the 2006 Australian Open, his best Grand Slam singles result, and advanced to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 1997 and the US Open in 2000.

In doubles he won a silver medal with partner Rainer Schüttler at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He also reached the semifinals of the year-end ATP Tour World Championships (Masters) in 1999.

Career prize money exceeded 7.4 million US dollars.

Additional team successes included contributions to Germany’s World Team Cup victories.
