Residents in Kisumu county on Friday afternoon scrambled for fuel from a leaking pipe along the Kisumu – Kibos pipeline.

The residents threw caution to the wind as they engaged in the dangerous activity of siphoning the fuel from the pipe in plastic jerrycans.

The police were forced to disperse the crowd siphoning the fuel until officials from the Kenya pipeline corporation arrived. They wanted to establish the course of the leak. Last year the pipe broke at the same place and it was established that unscrupulous business people had diverted the pipes causing the leak.

A KPC official said more personnel from Nairobi are set to fly to Kisumu to assess the damage.

Kenyans never seem to learn from tragedy, a few years ago Kenyans who had rushed to siphon fuel from trailer ended up perishing after a fire broke out.
