Lawyer and activists Okiya Omtatah has filed a case challenging the 16 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) levied on fuel which has increased the cost of fuel.

The activist has termed the increase that took effect on September 1 after a three year postponement as unlawful and irregular.

He said that the increase contravenes the constitution and has caused the cost of basic goods to rapidly increase.

In his petition Omtatah said that the tax was imposed even with the opposition by parliament who had asked that the tax be postponed for two years.

There has been a public outcry on the increase on the cost of fuel with people saying that it would affect the cost on all basic commodities.

The Central Organisation of trade unions (COTU) has also moved the court over the same issue. The secretary generalFrancis Atwoli said it would increase the cost of living

Matatu owners have since increased the fares by 20% to cover the cost fuel.

Also, he Kenya Independent Petroleum Distributors Association (KIPEDA) members this morning refused to collect stock from depots protesting the VAT implementation.
