    Early Life

Albert S. Ruddy was born on March 28, 1930, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was raised by his mother, Ruth, and spent parts of his childhood in New York City and Miami Beach, Florida.

During his teenage years, Ruddy attended Brooklyn Technical High School in New York. He later received a scholarship to the City College of New York, where he studied chemical engineering.

Ruddy subsequently moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture. His education initially pointed toward a career outside the entertainment industry. However, his professional interests eventually led him to Hollywood, where he developed a successful career as a producer and writer.

After graduating from USC, Ruddy designed homes on the East Coast. He later returned to California and obtained a position at Warner Bros. Pictures.

His early experience in the entertainment industry opened doors to other professional opportunities. Following a meeting with studio executive Jack L. Warner, Ruddy became a programmer trainee at the RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research and policy organisation.

He eventually returned to entertainment as a television writer at Universal Studios. This experience helped him establish industry connections and develop the skills that would support his later work as a producer.

    Producing The Godfather

One of the most important milestones in Ruddy’s career came in 1972, when he produced The Godfather. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based on Mario Puzo’s novel, the crime drama became one of the most influential films in Hollywood history.

The film received widespread critical acclaim and won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Its success brought Ruddy significant recognition and established his reputation as a producer capable of handling major film projects.

The production also became a defining part of his professional legacy. Decades later, the development of the film was dramatized in the 2022 Paramount+ miniseries The Offer. Ruddy served as an executive producer on the series, in which actor Miles Teller portrayed him.

    Other Successful Films

Ruddy’s career extended well beyond The Godfather. In 1965, he produced his first feature film, Wild Seed, sharing the producing credit with Marlon Brando Sr. He later produced Little Fauss and Big Halsy in 1970 and Making It in 1971.

In 1974, Ruddy produced The Longest Yard, a sports comedy based on his story idea. He followed it with Coonskin and Matilda, adding more variety to his filmography.

Another major commercial success came in 1981 with The Cannonball Run, an action comedy starring Burt Reynolds. Ruddy later produced its sequel, Cannonball Run II, released in 1984.

His other credits included MegaForce, Lassiter, Farewell to the King, Impulse, Ladybugs, The Scout, Bad Girls and Heaven’s Prisoners. He also produced the 2005 remake of The Longest Yard.

These projects helped sustain his career across different genres, including comedy, action, drama and sports films.

    Million Dollar Baby

In 2004, Ruddy produced Million Dollar Baby, a sports drama directed by Clint Eastwood. The film received major industry recognition and won the Academy Award for Best Picture, giving Ruddy his second Oscar in that category.

The achievement strengthened his position among Hollywood producers whose work had earned the industry’s highest honours. His association with Eastwood continued years later when he produced Cry Macho, released in 2021.

The two films also demonstrated Ruddy’s ability to remain active in the industry well into the later stages of his career.

    Television Career

Ruddy also built a successful television career. He began working as a writer on the CBS anthology series The Lloyd Bridges Show in 1963.

A few years later, he co-created Hogan’s Heroes, a sitcom that became a television hit. The series ran for six seasons and ended in 1971.

Ruddy later produced television films, including Thunderguys, The Macahans and Stockers. The Macahans was subsequently adapted into the television series How the West Was Won.

In 1993, Ruddy co-created Walker, Texas Ranger, an action crime series starring Chuck Norris. The show became one of his best-known television projects and ran for eight seasons through 2001. It also led to a television film released in 2005.

His work in television gave him another source of professional success beyond theatrical film production.

    Personal Life

Ruddy was married twice. His first wife was Françoise Wizenberg, whom he later divorced. Wizenberg subsequently became known as Ma Prem Hasya after following Indian spiritual leader Rajneesh.

In 1981, Ruddy married his second wife, Wanda McDaniel. They had two children, a son named John and a daughter named Alexandra.

Despite his long career in Hollywood, Ruddy continued working on film and television projects into his later years.
