Onana moved to Brussels, Belgium, at the age of 11 with his mother and sister to join his father, embarking on a journey that would see him rise through the ranks of European football.

    Siblings

Amadou grew up in a large extended household in Senegal’s Colobane neighborhood, surrounded by siblings, cousins, his mother, aunt, and grandparents in a bustling home of around 14 family members.

When he moved to Belgium at age 11, it was alongside his mother and his younger sister.

His older half-sister Mélissa, who is about 12 years his senior and shares the same father, has been particularly influential.

She supported him from a young age, hustling for trials, sending videos of his matches to clubs across Europe, and following him around Belgium as he pursued his dream.

Mélissa later became his agent, and the two maintain a close professional and personal relationship.

    Career

Onana’s professional journey began in Belgium’s youth system with clubs like Anderlecht, RWS Bruxelles (White Star Bruxelles), and Zulte Waregem.

At age 16, he moved to Germany to join TSG Hoffenheim’s academy, where his sister played a key role in securing the opportunity.

He made a limited senior appearance for Hoffenheim II before transferring to Hamburger SV in 2020.

There, he made his professional debut and scored in the DFB-Pokal.

In 2021, he joined French champions Lille, where he featured regularly in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League, gaining valuable experience against top competition.

His performances earned him a big move to Everton in the Premier League in August 2022 for around £33 million.

At Everton, Onana quickly established himself as a key midfielder, known for his box-to-box energy and defensive solidity, making over 60 league appearances and scoring several goals.

In July 2024, he transferred to Aston Villa for a reported £50 million.

He made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut against West Ham United and contributing goals and performances in the Premier League and European competitions.

By the 2025-26 season, he had become an integral part of the Villa squad.

On the international stage, Onana debuted for Belgium in 2022, participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2024, and scored his first senior goal in a 2026 friendly.

    Accolades

With Aston Villa, Onana won the UEFA Europa League in the 2025-26 season.

Individually, he was named Aston Villa Player of the Month for August 2024 shortly after joining the club.

His consistent displays in the Premier League and for Belgium have marked him as one of the promising defensive midfielders of his generation, with continued growth expected at both club and international levels.
