President Donald Trump’s plan to deploy troops to Chicago is an abuse of power, the Democratic governor of the US state of Illinois has said. There is no emergency that justifies the National Guard being sent to Illinois and the US president is “attempting to manufacture a crisis”, JB Pritzker said in a statement. Trump has already deployed about 2,000 troops to Washington DC, where the local government is also run by opposition Democrats, as part of what he is portraying as a crackdown on crime in US cities. On Friday, Trump said he would implement the policy in Chicago…

The Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said she was taking practical steps to end unacceptable delays. The government has been under increasing pressure to reduce its reliance on asylum hotels. It now wants to regain the initiative. Ministers have pledged to end hotel use in this parliament – but 32,000 asylum seekers are still…
Pope Leo XIV has said he is “delighted” the UK has agreed to hand the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Speaking to a delegation of 15 refugees from Chagos, Pope Leo said that the move represented a “significant victory” in their long battle to “repair a grave injustice”. Under the terms of a treaty signed in May, Mauritius will gain sovereignty of the islands from the UK, but allow the US and UK to continue operating a military base on one of the islands, Diego Garcia, for an initial period of 99 years. The pope said he hoped Mauritian authorities would…
Marcus Rashford was taken off at half-time on his full Barcelona debut before the defending La Liga champions staged a fightback from two goals down to beat Levante. The on-loan Manchester United forward was deployed on the left, with Raphinha down the middle behind Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal on the right, but struggled to make an impression in his 45 minutes on the pitch. Barcelona as a whole had been poor in the first half and fell behind in the 15th minute when Ivan Romero struck, cleverly working some space inside the box before slotting in. Torres hit the…

There were also 13 crucial points from the boot of Santiago Carreras. Billy…
Max Dowman stood laughing as Declan Rice bounced the ball off his backside during an open training session on Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Hong Kong in the summer. The 15-year-old then tried to mimic the fun piece of skill before manager Mikel Arteta punched the ball away to stop Dowman completing the movement during a light-hearted moment. It was a reminder that behind the enormous talent he has shown during his outings for the Arsenal first team in pre-season – and now on his Premier League debut -that Dowman is a year 10 student. That training session took place just…
Tottenham Hotspur made it back-to-back Premier League victories under new manager Thomas Frank by stunning Manchester City once again at the Etihad Stadium. Spurs came here last November and inflicted a 4-0 humbling of City in a scintillating performance, and went home once more with all three points courtesy of a resolute defensive display. They started slowly as Omar Marmoush latched onto Pedro Porro’s loose header and squeezed a shot narrowly wide of the far post before seeing a thunderous strike from range pushed away by Guglielmo Vicario. The Egyptian was lively early on and forced another excellent save from…

South Korea has confirmed it fired warning shots earlier in the week at North Korean soldiers who briefly crossed the heavily-fortified border between the two countries. North Korean state media called the shots a “deliberate provocation” and Pyongyang has accused Seoul of risking “uncontrollable” tensions. The incident was made public as new South Korean President Lee Jae Myung departed Seoul on Saturday for a visit to Tokyo and Washington. Pyongyang has upped the ante in recent weeks, with leader Kim Jong Un’s sister rebuffing efforts towards reconciliation made by Lee’s government. The incident took place amid continuing work by North…
US President Donald Trump announced Friday that the draw for the 2026 World Cup will be held in Washington on December 5 — and got a rare chance to hold the coveted football trophy. The 48-team event is being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico next year, and Trump has made a big deal about it happening during his presidency. The draw was reportedly due to be held in Las Vegas but Trump, accompanied by FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, said it would now be held at the Kennedy Center in the US capital. “It’s the biggest, probably the…
Global credit ratings agency S&P upgraded Kenya’s long-term sovereign credit rating to ‘B’ from ‘B-‘ on Friday, citing reduced near-term external liquidity risks. Robust export earnings and diaspora remittances have bolstered Kenya’s foreign exchange reserves, helping ease pressures related to high external imbalances, the rating agency said in a statement. S&P expects Kenya’s solid economic growth and improved liquidity outlook to offset pressures stemming from high interest costs and a slow fiscal consolidation process. President William Ruto said on Wednesday Kenya’s economic growth this year is expected to exceed official forecasts despite higher U.S. tariffs and other challenges. The economy…

Four more bodies were exhumed from Kwabinzaro, Kilifi County. This brought the total recovered since Thursday to nine, officials said. The issue has been linked to occultism amid efforts to solve them. Most of the victims had traveled from far away to the area for the mission. The second day of exhumations saw three graves dug up, containing four bodies, where victims were buried naked in shallow graves. Government agencies have hinted at the possibility of more mass graves in the area since the homicide department has mapped out a total of 27 graves. The exhumation, however, reveals that the graves…
